Documenting the Fungi of Hampshire

Millyford Bridge & Wood Crates - Sat 10 Nov 2012

Field event ID: HF1226

OS Grid areas: SU2607 SU2608 SU2708

Weather: Continuing dampness during the week, with just one freezing night. On the day, early rain was followed by bright sunshine.

Report: (Eric Janke) The location of this foray was chosen to encourage participation by attendees of the previous week’s educational event with some effect but not the family groups, which we have seen in earlier years. As far as fungi are concerned, the mild, damp weather is still encouraging the fruiting of sapotrophic fungi, with a few mycorrhizal species also fruiting. The Fomitiporella (Phellinus) cavicola was found on its usual log although it has decayed significantly since last visited. Nearby, there was a dark gilled agaric, resembling a Lepiota, which proved to be Melanophylum haematospermum - not a common find in the Forest. Close to the car-park, a fallen beech played host to a number of species including the curry-scented Phleogena faginea (fenugreek stiltball) and farinaceous Ossicaulis lignatilis. Alan also found the unusual, toothed resupinate Mycoacia nothofagi on another beech log, Aleurodiscus botryosus on both honeysuckle and rose (a new host),while Eric found another Aleurodiscus, the bright pink wakefieldiae, on a beech twig. While there were no real surprises, there was an adequate variety of fungi in sufficient numbers to interest the newcomers and more experienced forayers alike and the glorious autumn colours made the whole exercise a real pleasure.
