Weather: Mostly sunny after a period of wet weather.
Report: Itchen Wood is a new site for HFRG although it is part of the Northington Estate. It is mainly young Beech, with some mature oak and Birch at the margins.
There has been a notable lack of mycorrhizal species so far this year but the recent damp weather has finally encouraged the saprotrophic Agarics to start fruiting. There were numerous displays of Mycena haematopus (Burgundydrop Bonnet) and M inclinata (Clustered Bonnet)and numerous Pluteus cervinus (Deer Shield) and Lycoperdon pyriforme (Stump Puffball) on the rotting logs and Marasmius wynnei (Pearly parachute) and M cohaerens and another "bleeding" mycena - M crocata (Saffrondrop Bonnet) - on the leaf litter. M. wynnei has a darkening stipe base and a characteristic, sweetish smell while M cohaerens is very tough, due to the 'spinulae' in the gills, stipe and cap cuticle. Sue Lambert found a good showing of the less common Ganoderma applanatum (Artist's Bracket) on a log near to the car park with its softish cap contrasting with that of the G australe (Southern Bracket) on the same log. An older Ganoderma fruit body also played host to Trechispora nivea. Nothing particularly rare was identified but much of the material was very fresh and it was heartening to see the “cap'nstems” finally giving the paint fungi a run for their money, even if the only mychorrizal specimens were just a couple of Lactarus and a lone Russula ochroleuca...
