Weather: The preceding week had seen significant rain everyday following an official declaration of drought.

Report: (Sue Rogerson) There were ten forayers who ventured forth on the first foray of the year on a site which was wet after the recent rain. It was obvious after about half an hour searching there was not going to be a great deal of fungi to record but instead it turns out there were two non fungal finds to report. Paul Smith found an interesting bug, insect which became called the fly from hell The photos from both Pauls were stunning and the grape vine set into action quickly giving an identity which turned out to be a cranefly, Ctenophora flaveolata a Red Data Book 2 species. As we were making our way back to the cars Jax found a smart spider with a white stripe along its body. Having picked it up to get a closer look Jax was bitten for his troubles by what we believe to be one of the many wolf spiders. On the fungi front Sara found a fungus on Yew – Taxus – which is recorded on many different substrates but Yew is not one of them. It is a well known fungus usually found on Corylus but one we didn’t recognise except of course Alan. The host was checked to confirm it was Yew and the specimen examined under the microscope for confirmation as Hymenochaete corrugata – the glue fungus. Lentinus tigrinus is an uncommon species that was reported to the group by Dave Kelly. Unfortunately it was waterlogged and washed out after the recent rain. Peniophora pini is a rare fungus with just a few records in England and was found earlier in the week at the site.
