Northington: The Grange - Sun 3 Oct 2010

OS Grid areas: SU5635 SU5636

Weather: A day of drizzle and light rain changing to bright sunshine.

Report: (Eric Janke) To (mis-)quote the rhetorical sports commentator, it was a foray of two halves. The forayers assembled in the car park in gentle drizzle. Despite the gloomy conditions, Mark found the small, steel-grey Mycena pseudocorticola on a moss-covered trunk. Agaricus moelleri (placomyces) (Inky Mushroom) was prolific as usual and the pear-drop scented Inocybe fraudans was found by the lake. By lunchtime, forayers were fading fast and a much-reduced group proceeded into the larch plantation where regulars, such as Ramaria abietina, Lepista irina (Flowery Blewit) and Geastrum fimbriatum (Sessile Earthstar) were found quickly as well as the diminutive, white Ripartites tricholoma (Bearded Seamine), with its small round verrucose spores. By then the forayers had reduced to JP and Eric and to reward them the sun came out! The second half of the foray was glorious and the brave pair wandered over much more of the site, finding, among other things, Russula graveolens and Boletus luridiformis (Scarletina bolete) under a stand of beeches, Clitopilus hobsonii and Peziza micropus on fallen beech and Pleurotus dryinus (Veiled Oyster) on elder. However, the best site of the day was a pile of wood-chips back in the car park, which had a flush of Stropharia caerulea and a clump of the red-gilled Melanophyllum haematospermum (Redspored Dapperling). One can only presume that the wet prevented us finding them in the morning...
