Report: (Alan Lucas) This site has been visited by the group for many years and we tend to foray roughly the same route each year so it was decided that it would be a good idea to look at the most westerly part of the estate for a change. The woodland was not very different to the rest of the estate but due to the dry conditions fungi were hard to come by. In the end, around 70 species were found, most of which were the commoner ones. However, as often happens, even when conditions are poor, we manage to find something new; Eric had Peziza succosa from the alder at the edge of the lake and Alan found Oxyporus obducens and Claussenomyces atrovirens. A small orange cup fungi kept Eric and Alan busy for a while until Alan spotted a reference indicating that Bisporella citrina had "slightly concave" cups...
When foraying in unfamiliar woods the possibility of losing each other always increases and this did indeed happen. This was probably due to the (alleged) leader charging off in a cloud of dust, while a fallen beech that kept four/ five of the others busy for a while. In the end, the imposing presence of the Grange itself was a good enough landmark to guide us all back to the shelter of the cars just as the rain started in earnest.
