New to HFRG: Postia ceriflua, Mycenella salicina

OS Grid areas: SU2437

Weather: A mostly dry but overcast day with occasional light rain.

Report: HFRG was grateful to Ailsa McKee and the Porton Conservation Group for asking us to join them at what is a new site for the group. We explored two areas of woodland that both lie on Hampshire side of its boundary with Wiltshire that runs across the Down. The morning was spent exploring Isle of Wight Wood and shortly after starting out there was excitement by the discovery of Phellodon niger (Black Tooth) with its striking velvety dark blue-black surface and sheath stem. When we returned to the cars for lunch there in front of the cars was a small mycena like fungus which on later examination turned out to be a first record for the group of Mycenella salicinus (Willow bonnet) a rarely encountered genus. Another interesting find to look out for on pine was Crepidotus applanatus var. subglobiger which has different cystidia to C applanatus (Flat Osterling). This is the same species as C stenocystis in Funga Nordica. Finding a new bolete for Hampshire is unusual but Suillus collinitus was found amongst the pines with its stem clearly showing brown dots and a pink mycelium. Porton has a reputation for white amanitas and both A strobiliformis (Warted Amanita) and A echinocephala (Solitary Amanita), which should now be known as A solitaria as it is in mainland Europe, were present.
