Documenting the Fungi of Hampshire

College Copse Farm - Sat 20 Sep 2014

Field event ID: HF1415

New Records:
New to Hampshire: Gloeocystidiellum clavuligerum, Amanita olivaceogrisea
New to VC12: Tomentella sublilacina, Inocybe ovatocystis

OS Grid areas: SU7155

Weather: Mostly dry after heavy rain several weeks earlier. Recent thunderstorms appear not to have affected this area.

Report: College Copse Farm is a working farm used to house the HWT‘s grazing herd but still has patches of reportedly ancient, damp birch/willow/alder woodland. The dry ground did not encourage the forayers as they walked across the farmland to the woodland. The only excitement being the dense clumps of the ringless Armillaria tabescens growing on dead oak stumps. Once in the woodland, the finds were still sparse but contained several unusual species. Ginny found a "roll-rim" Paxillus rubicundulus under the alder and some gracile Amanitas which turned out to be A. olivaceogrisea under birch/willow. Paul found a group of the small, hairy Phaeomarasmius erinaceus on a willow branch, which get my vote for “find of the day”. Other habitat specific species were Lactarius obscuratus and Hymenoscyphus salicellus found by Mike and Inocybe ovatocystis with its balloon-like cystidia. As has been normal this season, Paul‘s box was soon bulging with resupinates among which were Gloeocystidiellum clavuligerum - a first for Hampshire with only a handful of UK records from Surrey and Hertfordshire, and a couple more for his book; Hyphodontia arguta and Tomentella sublilacina, the latter also new to VC12 and the group.
