Report: As usual, the last survey of the year was at this site. The freezing temperatures rather reduced the number of participants and the amount of fungi on offer.
Of the few ‘cap and stem’ fungi found, there was a particularly photogenic Funeral Bell (Galerina marginata) with a seasonal covering of frost.
Much of our time was spent examining fallen trees and logs, which provided us with plenty of puzzling resupinate fungi (crusts) and others which were more easily identified. Amongst the latter, we recorded Bleeding Broadleaf Crust (Stereum rugosum), Wet Rot (Coniophora puteana), Yellow Cobweb (Phlebiella sulphurea), Glue Crust (Hymenochaete corrugata) and Oak Curtain Crust (Hymenochaete rubiginosa).
Samples later analysed under the microscope added a few more species including Fawn Starweb (Asterostroma cervicolor), Schizopora radula, the bluish Peniophora limitata and Junghuhnia nitida.
A few colonies of Fenugreek Stalkball (Phleogena faginea) were seen along with King Alfred’s Cakes (Daldinia concentrica), Hazel Woodwart (Hypoxylon fuscum), Annulohypoxylon minutellum (on oak) and Lemon Disco (Bisporella citrina).
A twig from a currant bush bore some tiny cup fungi, just a couple of millimetres in diameter, with a greenish hue and scurfy outer surface. These were later confirmed as Currant Cup (Godronia ribis).
