Report: This 3-day public event consisted of six guided fungus forays (twice daily) in the surrounding Holiday Hills Inclosure. There was a good attendance for each walk and the weather remained largely dry

As is often the case here, there were enough interesting species to be found within a short distance of the centre, with each given a thorough explanation by the walk leader, Eric Janke.

HFRG had a manned display set up in the hut and quite a few fungi species were found in the immediate surrounds. These included Lyophyllum decastes (Clustered Domecap), Coprinopsis picacea (Magpie Inkcap), Britzelmayria multipedata (Clustered Brittlestem), Sparassis crispa (Cauliflower Fungus), Lycoperdon nigrescens (Dusky Puffball), Phaeolus schweinitzii (Dyer’s Mazegill), Amanita excelsa var. spissa (Grey Spotted Amanita) and Amanita muscaria (Fly Agaric).

A particularly interesting find beside the main track, was Pseudoboletus parasiticus (Parasitic Bolete) a species which obtains all its nutrients from another fungus, Scleroderma citrinum (Common Earthball). This example showed five bolete fruit-bodies emerging from the single earthball.  In the adjacent pinewood we discovered Tricholomopsis rutilans (Plums and Custard), Leotia lubrica (Jellybaby), Cortinarius semisanguineus (Surprise Webcap), Phallus impudicus (Stinkhorn) and Baeospora myosura (Conifercone Cap).

Walks to the damp grassland produced Pholiota alnicola (Alder Scalycap), Gymnopilus junonius (Spectacular Rustgill), Cortinarius violaceus (Violet Webcap), Cabbage Parachute (Gymnopus brassicolens), Russula sardonia (Primrose Brittlegill), Collybia maculata (Spotted Toughshank) and Mycena capillaripes (Pinkedge Bonnet).
