New to Hampshire: Phellinus populicola

Report: Several members of the group attended the New Forest Bioblitz event organised by the New Forest National Park Authority. The event started on Friday evening and ran for 24hours until 4pm on Saturday. There were several events during this period including two woodland walks which was the focus of the HFRG presence. There were large tents for the display and recording of specimens along with a refreshment tent full of savoury and sweet goodies and drinks organised by the Scouts. An initial quick trip before the walk revealed we were not going to be overwhelmed with fruitbodies and were going to have to work hard for our food. About 10 to 20 people attended the walks where we soon found the one thing the rain had done was to bring out the slime moulds, particularly Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa which was found on several occasions. Paul did find a recumbent specimen of Amanita excelsa var spissa to show the public a 'toadstool'. At one point Paul noticed some bracken fronds being shaken by something quite large which aroused his curiosity until Stuart emerged clutching a twig with glee. On it was the lovely Aleurodiscus wakefieldiae (Pink disco) which explained Stuart's grin. During the afternoon walk Simon Moore directed us to a bracket he had noticed and as we approached Sara pointed out this was a poplar tree. There on the trunk in a crevice was what looked like Phellinus igniarius but this was not a willow. After much checking and a revisit by Stuart and Alan, who missed the Saturday trip, it looks as if this is the first sighting of Phellinus populicola in Hampshire.
