Weather: The winter snow and ice had finally melted and the previous week had seen temperatures up to 11C! The day was overcast with an occasional few spots of rain.

Report: After the foray at Crab Wood before Christmas was cancelled due to bad weather there was a ground swell of opinion to hold the event early in January, weather still permitting. The opportunity to enjoy Sue and Eric’s hospitality was also not to be missed! There was a good turnout of members for a chilly damp January day which turned out to be surprisingly productive after such a prolonged frozen period of time with a total of 65 records. Shortly after leaving the car park an elder tree was cloaked in a fine display of Auricularia auricula-judae (Jelly ear) and Flammulina velutipes (Velvet Shank). The former was found in profusion throughout the morning foray. For those who had not seen Phylloporia ribis before it was ‘showing nicely’ once again. Specimens of Encoelia furfuracea (Spring Hazelcup) provided an excellent photo opportunity for Paul and others. Despite the weather there were several specimens of small delicate mycenas on the trunk and branches of trees and amongst the decaying wood there were several collections of (Dewdrop Bonnet) showing the typical ‘dewdrops’ along the stem and on the cap. The liveliest discussion both during and after the foray concerned a small gilled ‘crepidotus’ shaped fungus with white spores. The final verdict was Hohenbuehelia cyphelliformis, a fungus seen by Alan on a couple of previous occasions.

Shortly after midday hunger was settling in and we eventually made our way to Eric’s house for some hot food in both the temperature and chilli meaning. Our thanks going to Eric and Sue for being our Christmas hosts once again.
