Report: A very mild day with a light southerly breeze, saw another good turn-out as we gathered in the car-park at Eyeworth Pond. Two pairs of Goosander and a Mandarin Duck were seen on the lake before we set off towards the wood on the far side.
One of the first good finds was the unobtrusive but fascinating Marasmius hudsonii (Holly Parachute), whose minute fruit-bodies grow out of dead holly leaves. Uniquely, the whitish cap bears numerous long hairs. The willows around the edge of the pond had good numbers of Daedaleopsis confragosa (Blushing Bracket) and some Melanotus horizontalis (Wood Oysterling).
On moss-covered beech logs, we found Mycena arcangeliana (Angel’s Bonnet) and Mycena pseudocorticola, whilst on birch there was Mycena rorida (Dripping Bonnet) and Sarcomyxa serotina (Olive Oysterling). Stropharia semiglobata (Dung Roundhead) was found on pony dung and we discovered both Lactarius subdulcis (Mild Milkcap) and L. quietus (Oakbug Milkcap).
With much to record despite the lateness of the season, our progress was slow but eventually we made it to more mature woodland where the trunks of fallen giant oaks and beech were investigated. Here we found the uncommon Hydropus subalpinus growing from a piece of decaying wood and Phleogena faginea (Fennugreek Stalkball) on the underside of a beech log. The latter has a distinct scent of curry, especially when dried.
One beech trunk had a good variety of species growing on it, including Oudemansiella mucida (Porcelain Fungus), Calocera cornea (Small Stagshorn), Trametes gibbosa (Lumpy Bracket), Bjerkandera adusta (Smoky Bracket), Phlebia radiata (Wrinkled Crust) and the less common, Trametes ochracea (Ochre Bracket) and Laxitextum bicolor.
Further finds in this area, were Cudoniella acicularis (Oak Pin), Phlebia tremellosa (Jelly Rot), Exidia plana (Warlock’s Butter), Exidia nucleata (Crystal Brain) and Polyporus leptocephalus (Blackfoot Polypore).
The onset of a short, sharp post-lunch shower brought a curtailment to proceedings, but it had been another enjoyable and instructive event.
