Frenchmoor - Sun 12 Nov 2017

Nearest postcode: SP5 1PB

Park at SU279284

From the A36 approximatly 4 miles south of Salisbury, take the east bound road (from the south off at Whaddon to go over the A36) then on through West Dean, north across the automatic railway line crossing (see below) to the village sign saying West Tytherley(WT) at the start of the village, but still in the wood. Immediately behind this sign is another sign saying Frenchmoor to the right. Take this road called Red Lane. After only about 80 yds Red Lane bends sharp left, continue on Red Lane. *(This looks like a crossroads but the track opposite is Bulls Drove which leads only to 2 houses after which it becomes an unmade path not drivable but some maps make it look like a road. Also do not go right there either into ”Frenchmoor Lane“ as it leads away from the entrance to the wood). Still on Red Lane and after winding through part of the village for about a mile the road forks at a small grassy triangle, then go sharp right into Pugs Hole (narrow lane) and continue for about 1.5 miles just past ”Season's Cottage“ and the entrance to the wood is opposite on the right through a barrier. (The road ahead only leads to a farm & cottage)

Non-members are welcome to join any foray but please contact us to check for last minute changes. All events start at 10am.

This is a combined meeting with the Salisbury & District & District Natural History Society. The site is on London Clay, is woodland with wide rides some of which are unimproved grassland

Important note: At West Dean there is an automatic safe barrier to cross the railway line, but do not attempt to cross the railway line nearer East Dean as it is not manned, has two gates to open and close, and I believe is only a ”by foot“ crossing. It is quite a busy line and no warnings are given.
